Timber Harvesting Methods

Select Cutting

If you would like to continue to use your forest, using a single or Select Method would be our best choice, but it is also the most intensive. In this method, the forest will continue to produce timber and constantly need seedling trees. This will benefit the wildlife in your areas like deer, turkeys, and squirrels.

Clearcutting

Clearcutting removes all the trees and an area and will change the look of an area by removing the canopy of the forest. Clearcut is an effective way to convert unhealthy stands to healthy productive forests because it allows the forest managers to control the tree species that grow.

Shelterwood Cutting

Shelterwood cutting removes the mature trees in several harvests over a period of 10 to 15 years. It allows the wildlife to continue to live in the forest and allows hardwoods such as oak, cherry, and hickory to produce seedlings. It will require more roads to be cut into the forest to remove these trees.

Seed Tree Harvesting

Seed tree harvesting allows five or more trees scattered per acre are left in the harvested area to provide seeds for a new forest to grow. These trees are selected based on several factors their growth rate, form, seeding ability, wind resistance, and future marketability. There is some disadvantage to the forest as it can be damaged by wind, unmanaged growth, soil erosion, or lighting.

Group Selection

Group selection is when a small area is clearcut over several decades. This method is used on bottomland hardwood to harvest high-quality top dollar logs. The size of the area will be determined by the type of trees to be removed, usually, it is one-fourth of an acre. This will require the management of the property to have the forest regenerate properly.

We will discuss with you the type of timber harvesting method we suggest for your property and will only proceed if you agree this is the type of processing you would like for your land.
